How to Read Materials Before Buying Home Goods
A practical material guide for reading product descriptions and choosing home goods that fit your daily life.

Materials tell you how a home good will feel, function, age, and need care. Reading the material line before buying can prevent disappointment.
Look past the photo
Photos show style. Materials show behavior. Cotton, linen, ceramic, glass, wood, metal, and synthetic blends each handle use differently.
Match material to the job
A serving piece needs different durability than a shelf object. A bath textile needs absorbency. A candle vessel needs heat-safe use according to its label.
Check care before buying
If you will not hand wash, air dry, oil, or spot clean a piece, be honest before purchasing it.
Watch vague language
Words like premium or luxury mean little without material detail. Look for specific fiber, finish, origin, or care information.
Material questions
- What is it made from?
- How will I use it?
- What care does it require?
- Will it age well?
- Does the material fit the price?
